While some people may be new to the Green Smoothie Club, others have been adding handfuls of spinach, kale, celery, and parsley to their blends for years. For all you prospective members who may be hesitating due to the muddled green colour of some of our green smoothie concoctions, I’ve got a smoothie recipe for you. Full of healthy greens, but no green colour in sight! How about that?
Green smoothies have been all the rage as of late. A more substantial alternative to juicing, blending up your ingredients instead of separating the juice from the pulp drastically increases fiber content which helps slow digestion, keeping your fuller, longer! Smoothies are also a quick, easy and convenient way to pack a few extra servings of fruits and veggies into your busy life, and I think it’s safe to say we could all use a little more of that.
This chocolate cherry smoothie recipe is a nice break. Even if you’re a fan of healthy green smoothies, you may tire of their taste from time to time. We all get bored of the same flavours and textures, and sooner or later we all fall into a rut. So if we can make the yummy and convenient choice also the healthy choice, we won’t feel deprived of the good stuff that we enjoy – like black forest cake – and it’s when we don’t feel deprived that we are able to maintain positive behaviour changes. It’s all in the balance of moderation – 365 days a year.
The cocoa powder and cherries in this smoothie both have deep flavours and colours which a) mask the green colour, b) completely hide the taste of spinach, and c) make this smoothie taste mmm mmm good! Sugar can also be cause for concern in many commercially made smoothies, which is all the more reason to make your own at home. Control the sugar content by using naturally sweet fruits like bananas, apples or cherries which eliminate the need for added sugars, like honey.
This black forest smoothie tastes like dessert without the indulgence. Pair this smoothie with a source of protein for a complete and satisfying breakfast packed with fruits, veggies and a heathy amount of fiber that will keep you going all the way until lunch time. I’m telling you, it’s black magic.
